Are You Worth It?

Depression is found to be a common risk for people who have lost their vision from age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Why?

Patterns observed in different illnesses tell me that any severe illness carries the risk of sufferers fallen into depression. What is it? In these cases, people suffer from pain, traumas and despair.

It leads us to think that pain, traumas and despair from any situation are the factors pushing a person into a state of mind that is susceptible to depression. Depression has external causes. If the situation warrant depressing thoughts, it doesn't take long for someone to become ill.

In the past, we overlooked and ignored these health endangering factors in our lives and in the lives of those we care about. Then it was too late when depression took over.

Pain, traumas, and a person's despair could be lessened if we act in time. At such time, a little time we spend with someone to listen and care for him or her is preventative medicine.

To decrease the risk of depression for people with macular degeneration; researchers offer a multi-disciplinary approach that bridges primary eye care, psychiatry, psychology, and rehabilitation. It takes a little thinking for people who try to understand possible antidotes for depression.

I'd like to take this opportunity to affirm that treatment of depression must address all aspect of a person's health, such as suggested above. New study shows that similar therapy can cut this risk in half. If recent numbers provided by NIH is close, that means saving about 5 million Americans from depression.

It usually takes big numbers like this motivate researchers and professional caregivers to roll up their sleeves to work harder. But if you are someone whose at risk of depression, the number can be as small as one, that is you. If you are conscious about your health, your goals and your future, preventative medicine will have some value for you.

What would you do to save yourself from depression?
